Curious about Makerspaces, ArtHives, Genius Hours and Passion Projects? These open-ended, interest-driven learning spaces provide learners of all ages and abilities with the unique opportunity to engage with various technologies as agents and creators. From exploring circuitry by connecting a board to a computer, to creating wearable technologies and robots that draw, the maker movement has expanded the way we see our place in the technological world. But it has also impacted the way that diverse learners see themselves and others in the school setting. In our work with both students and teachers, we have seen first-hand students who struggle academically or students with special needs, shine when presented with a hands-on technological challenge. We have seen these students engaged for significant amounts of time, solving open-ended problems that call upon various knowledge and skills. We have witnessed students eager to discuss their work and excited to talk about the process. This workshop will examine how Makerspaces and the maker mindset can engage learners of varying abilities not just when it comes to technology, but when it comes to learning itself.
