Fostering a Maker Mindset: Engaging Diverse Learners Through Creative Spaces in Schools
Limited Capacity seats available

Curious about Makerspaces, ArtHives, Genius Hours and Passion Projects? These open-ended, interest-driven learning spaces provide learners of all ages and abilities with the unique opportunity to engage with various technologies as agents and creators. From exploring circuitry by connecting a board to a computer, to creating wearable technologies and robots that draw, the maker movement has expanded the way we see our place in the technological world. But it has also impacted the way that diverse learners see themselves and others in the school setting. In our work with both students and teachers, we have seen first-hand students who struggle academically or students with special needs, shine when presented with a hands-on technological challenge. We have seen these students engaged for significant amounts of time, solving open-ended problems that call upon various knowledge and skills. We have witnessed students eager to discuss their work and excited to talk about the process. This workshop will examine how Makerspaces and the maker mindset can engage learners of varying abilities not just when it comes to technology, but when it comes to learning itself.

Google Forms--When Technology Serves Pedagogy
Limited Capacity seats available

This presentation will demonstrate how to use Google Forms. They will see how it can be used daily in their classroom with their students and how this tool is powerful for formative assessment, summative assessment and also just to pinpoint students’ needs. In addition, giving students something else than a pencil and paper will enhance their participation and keep them focused. Finally, they will have a “live” guided tour and will wrap up the session with the most important part...hands-on! They will have tasks to do and will be able to practise. They will be able to create their forms as soon as they leave this workshop and will have resources available to them.

*Participants must bring their computer as Google Forms cannot be built using other digital devices. Also, they need a Google Drive account in order to have a full experience of the hands-on component. If these are not possible, they can group up with someone else.
